Yes! At least this much should be done. My strong preference is that no author's work should be modified by anyone, ever. To allow such modification is clearly to venture onto a slippery slope. Where is the line between offensive words and offensive ideas? What would, for example, prevent ideologically sensitive editors from watering down arguments they disagree with? Or worse?

People should treasure the old physical books they own. Keep them! If you no longer have physical bookshelves in your home, store your books for posterity. For there will come a time when all our information is digital and may therefore be easily modified to make of history whatever current politics demands. There is real danger here!
